Research Technician

University of Birmingham - Institute of Cardiovascular Sciences

The role holder will work within the Institute of Cardiovascular Sciences for 6 months with specific responsibility for supporting the delivery pilot data for a Dr Iqbal’s newly formed research group investigating the actions of the galectins in pre-clinical models of vascular inflammation and atherosclerosis, and the mechanisms by which they regulate monocyte recruitment.

Along with the day-to day duties the research will include:

Basic molecular biology methods to include:

  • PCR
  • Western blotting
  • RNA silencing
  • Foam cell formation.
  • Flow cytometry

  • Tissue culture of primary and immortalised mammalian cell lines.
  • Collecting research data through a variety of research methods including scientific experimentation, literature reviews, and research interviews.

Person Specification:

  • NVQ, BTEC/ONC or equivalent; or specific relevant experience in an appropriate subject.
  • GCSE (A*- C) or equivalent in mathematics.
  • Proven practical experience of relevant techniques stated within job description and Good Laboratory Practice.
  • Awareness of current relevant H&S policies.
  • Positive service attitude and shows courtesy in dealing with others.
  • Ability to organise and manage own work load after consultation with supervisor and demonstrate flexibility in terms of work practices/requirements.
  • Ability to work as part of a team but to perform under minimum supervision.
  • Proficiency in commonly used software packages.
  • Willingness to work towards professional registration.

Full time starting salary is normally in the range £19,581 to £20,939, with potential progression once in post to £25,509 a year.
