The work performed by the Cellular & Molecular Therapy (CMT) Laboratories in NHS Blood and Transplant (NHSBT), is central to the provision and improvement of life saving stem cell transplants. Our laboratories support over half of all haemopoietic stem cell transplants performed in England each year through a network of GMP grade laboratories in 7 specialist facilities across the country. Working with academic partners in Centres of Excellence, we aim to be at the forefront of clinical improvements related to these transplants and to use our expertise in GMP, quality and regulatory matters to promote other areas of research.
Our laboratory analyses, processes and issues peripheral blood, umbilical cord and bone marrow derived CD34+ stem cells for patients undergoing haemopoietic progenitor cell (HPC) transplantation. Our Advanced Therapies Unit (ATU) in partnership with academia and regional transplant programmes also provides the opportunity for involvement in the manufacture of novel investigational medicinal products for use in clinical trials.
