Flow Cytometry Specialist

The flow cytometry core places a strong emphasis on creating an environment where scientists and physician scientists can work together using the most appropriate approaches available. There are strong interactions with a wide range of independent research groups, supporting an exciting range of basic and clinical research projects; furthermore, the position offers exceptional opportunities for interdisciplinary collaboration within and outside of the Institute.
We are currently seeking a Flow Cytometry Specialist with intermediate experience to integrate within an exciting team of scientific and technologically-driven staff.
As a Flow Cytometry Specialist you will:

  • Perform different type of sorting
  • Independently operate and perform simple troubleshooting and repairs on cell sorters and flow cytometry equipment
  • Become familiar with all software used in the facility and assist facility users in learning to use this software
  • Perform daily startup and routine maintenance of flow cytometry instrumentation
  • Perform quality control of instrumentation as required
  • Understand and utilize common and unique biological applications, cell handling techniques, and reagents used by researchers and assist them in designing and optimizing their flow cytometry experiments
  • Work with the senior staff on implementation of updates to the facility instruments and computer capabilities
  • Must be able to work a flexible schedule and to work in a BSL-2 environment
  • Provide training to assist self-operators to improve their skills in all aspects of flow cytometry
  • Perform general lab maintenance as needed; maintain lab stock, manage reagent inventory and QC records, and provide general lab support as needed

      The successful candidate should have:

      • a degree in biological sciences related disciplines
      • a minimum of 2-4 years of relevant working experience in a flow cytometry laboratory environment
      • proficiency with laboratory techniques and state of the art flow cytometry instrumentation and methods
      • knowledge of computing platforms to maintain, backup and update instrument PC’s and transfer data to designated servers
      • team-based research, with the ability to multi-task in a busy core facility
      • good English speaking and writing skills
      • excellent interpersonal skills

      This is a one-year full time position with possible contract extension, or tenure, based on performance. The approximate start date of this position will be September 2019.
