Description & Details

We are seeking a Manager-Flow Cytometry Core - Medical Research that will be responsible for independently overseeing daily operations of Flow Cytometry Services at the Earle A. Chiles Research Institute. This includes, but is not limited to, customer interactions, experimental design, data generation & analysis, equipment management, personnel management and service transactions.

In this position you will have the following responsibilities:

  • Instrument maintenance, standardization, and quality assurance:
  • Establish and/or modifies and/or implements Standard Operating Procedures for routine instrument maintenance and performance evaluation
  • Perform instrument setup and acquisition of samples independently
  • Perform calibration/alignment, maintenance, trouble-shooting, repair of cytometers and associated facility instruments
  • Document instrument performance, maintenance, service and corrective actions in accordance with CLIA standards
  • Cytometry training:
  • Provide training for technicians and investigators with respect to the basics of the technology, instrument startup/shutdown and maintenance, data acquisition and transfer, and data analysis as needed
  • Experimental Design and optimization:
  • Work together with the laboratory Director to advise investigators regarding experimental design and data analysis
  • Educate core laboratory clients with respect to sample requirements for specific experimental goals
  • Work with investigators to explore and optimize current and emerging techniques
  • Core management:
  • Assess inventory and order supplies when needed
  • Conduct operations of the facility within safety guidelines for instrument operation, as well as chemical and biological safety standards
  • Maintain reporting and billing, process costing and fee development, budget development and management
  • Manage technical staff including recruitment, training, tasking, goal-setting, development, mentoring and evaluation
  • Continuing education:
  • Maintain technical currency, identify and assess developing technologies, platforms, reagents, and methods. Import and deploy as appropriate
  • Present novel assays and techniques to research group
  • Assay development:
  • Work independently or together with other laboratory staff to design and optimize new analytical methods
  • Work with Director to evaluate new and existing methods with respect to accuracy, precision and reproducibility
  • Propose changes as necessary to improve these measureables
  • Data analysis:
  • Work independently or together with Director to establish analysis strategies for flow cytometry-based assays
  • Evaluate new tools for data analysis and data reduction. Train and implement others as required

Qualifications:

Required qualifications for this position includes:

  • Bachelor's Degree OR Master's Degree in Biological sciences or related discipline
  • Coursework/Training:
  • Specialized training (theoretical and practical) in the application and conduct of flow cytometry practices
  • Training in bacteriological, viral, chemical and physical safety
  • Five (5) years of related experience, to include supervisory/management experience
  • Demonstrated experience analyzing data from flow cytometry platforms using specialized analysis software and reducing that data to figures suitable for scientific presentations (FlowJo, DiVa and Microsoft Office products (Word, Excel, PowerPoint) and other common tools)
  • Demonstrated success training and supervising others
  • Proficiency with Macintosh and PC computers and handheld devices
  • Able to work safely in a BSL2 environment
  • Able to safely work with lasers and high voltage
  • Able to work independently
  • Able to make and implement decisions quickly, efficiently and safely
  • Proficient knowledge of immunology, genetics, and flow cytometry
